The 28-year-old will, somewhat surprisingly, see his existing deal with the Champions League winners expire at the end of the 2019-20 campaign.

Matip scored in Liverpool’s 3-1 win over Arsenal in the Premier League on Saturday.

Meanwhile, the centre-back has started and finished each of the team’s last three fixtures after being left out for Joe Gomez against Norwich City in the first game of the season.

Matip, as it stands, would be free to discuss terms with foreign clubs in January.

However, the Cameroon international has developed into a real favourite of Jurgen Klopp, and it would be a surprise to not see him sign a new contract.
